*Audio excerpt read by author J. Rene Guerrero below*
This week’s reading from my novel, White Rock, is set in a very notorious location, the cold and impersonal twelve-story edifice of Bobst Library at NYU. I don’t want to give away any spoilers by commenting on or explaining the reason for the building’s reputation, so I’ll let the information disclose itself. But believe me, it’s well worth the wait.
In the previous chapter, Laura had a shocking dream in which she relived the horror of her mother’s death. This dream is weighing heavily on her mind as she enters this scene.
Colin Jonahs, Laura’s long-time life partner, had previously expressed that he was creeped out by the Bobst Library building, and for good reason. But the vast open spaces and cold uniformity of the structure hold a comforting, almost an intoxicating allure for Laura.
The audio recording this time around has been optimized and peppered with sound effects and light musical sweetening. These additions are meant to pull the listener in deeper into the presentation and give a rich ‘theatre of the mind’ experience, reminiscent of the golden age of radio. Again, not wanting to ruin it, I’ll just let you experience the excerpt for yourself. I suggest listening with earphones in a quiet environment to appreciate the subtle sound effects.
Enjoy…
